Safe land. Safe return.

We train mine detection dogs and their instructors, and develop modern systems for detecting and neutralising explosive ordnance, from drones to bee-based detection, so that Ukraine’s land can be made safe faster and with fewer losses.

Today we train mine detection dogs, their handlers and specialists, and develop detection technology. Clearance is carried out by accredited operators. We are preparing to apply for our own demining licence in Ukraine.

Our mission

To help make Ukraine’s land safe again, by developing better ways to find explosive ordnance and by helping people stay safe until their land is cleared.

We see a Ukraine where every family can return home and every farmer can work their fields without fear.

Since 2022, landmines and unexploded ordnance have spread across farmland, forests, villages and infrastructure in Ukraine. Clearing them with traditional methods alone will take decades.

Global Mine Action Hub is a program operated under Sydän Ukrainalle ry, a registered Finnish non-profit association (Y-tunnus 3543515-1).

  • People firstEvery method we develop is judged by one test: does it reduce risk to people?
  • ImpartialityWe help according to need, without discrimination.
  • StandardsOur work follows the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and Ukraine’s national requirements.
  • TransparencyPartners and donors always know what we do and how support is used.

Detection technology

No single method finds every hazard. We combine biological detection, aerial data and machines, so that each one covers the weaknesses of the others.

Detection dogs and their handlers

We train mine detection dogs and the instructors who work with them. A dog and handler team can check suspected ground quickly and precisely.

Training follows international standards for animal detection, with regular testing of every team. It takes place at our training ground near Iisalmi, North Savo, Finland.

After licensing

We apply the full system ourselves, as a licensed demining operator in Ukraine.

What we do

Our work covers the five pillars of humanitarian mine action defined by the International Mine Action Standards.

  • Training

We train detection dogs, their instructors and specialists who will work in the field.

  • Detection technology and survey

We develop tools and methods that show faster where explosive hazards are, and help partners plan their work.

  • Risk education

We teach children and adults how to recognise danger and act safely, with digital and AI-assisted materials.

  • Victim assistance

We help survivors and their families find medical, rehabilitation and psychological support through trusted partners.

  • Advocacy

We raise awareness in Finland, Europe, the UK and the US of the long-term cost of explosive contamination.

Global Mine Action Hub is launched

Our website is now live in English, Ukrainian and Finnish, together with our LinkedIn page. We have started building partnerships with researchers in bee-based explosive detection and are preparing the next phase of our pilot.

New videos appear here as soon as they are published on our channels.

Offer your help

Join our dog programme

We train mine detection dogs and their handlers at our own training ground. To grow the programme, we are looking for dogs and people.

Kennels and breeders

We are not a breeding kennel. We are looking for kennels and owners ready to donate puppies or young dogs with a strong nose and a drive to search: for example Belgian and Dutch Shepherds, German Shepherds, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, English Springer and Cocker Spaniels, beagles and Jack Russell terriers. Mixed breeds are welcome too, because character matters more than pedigree. We assess each dog together with the breeder or owner and keep you informed about its training.

Future dog handlers

Would you like to become a dog handler? Previous experience is not required: we will train you. We are looking for motivated volunteers who are ready to work with a dog regularly at our training ground.

Our training ground is near Iisalmi, North Savo, Finland.
